Joanna Borrett is a composer and cellist. She has had several books of string music published, which have been well received by critics. Several of her pieces are included in the current ABRSM and Trinity string exam syllabuses.
Joanna’s first string orchestra work – Clan – was recorded by Her Ensemble in 2024. The recording was chosen as Album of the Weekend by Scala Radio, Video of the Day by Gramophone and the third movement has been played on Radio 3’s programmes Earlier and Classical Unwind. Clan has also been played by the Duchess of Edinburgh’s String Orchestra at the royal investitures at Holyrood Palace.
Joanna’s music combines elements of both classical and folk and is melodic with a strong sense of narrative. Her work has been published by U.M.P. S.J.Music and she is a house composer at Kevin Mayhew.
The recording of Joanna’s song cycle – Moments of Freedom – is being released in September, and in October Her Ensemble are recording more of her string orchestra music. Her beginner cello and piano book – Wild Cello – has just been published.
